Dethatching
What is Lawn Dethatching?
Dethatching is an essential maintenance technique for preserving lawn health. It involves removing the excessive accumulation of thatch, a dense layer of dead roots, stems, and undecomposed organic matter that builds up between the grass and the soil. When this layer exceeds 0.5 inches thick, it acts as a barrier preventing water, air, and nutrients from reaching the roots.
While a slight thatch layer can be beneficial, excess suffocates the lawn and causes weak, yellowish growth prone to disease. Dethatching restores balance and allows the lawn to “breathe” properly.
Our Professional Dethatching Process
1. Lawn inspection
We assess the thickness of the thatch layer to determine whether dethatching is needed. We also check for the appropriate time of year, as this procedure is best performed in spring or fall.
2. Area preparation
We mow the lawn lower than usual and clean the surface to facilitate the equipment’s work.
3. Mechanical dethatching
We use a dethatcher or mechanical rake that lifts and removes the thatch layer without damaging the lawn. This tool penetrates just above the soil, efficiently removing the accumulated matter.
4. Waste collection
We collect all extracted material from the lawn, as leaving it on the surface could lead to the reformation of a thatch layer.
5. Complementary treatments (optional)
If the lawn is weakened after dethatching, we recommend overseeding, fertilization, or deep watering to encourage recovery.

Benefits of Good Dethatching
- Allows better oxygenation: By removing the surface barrier, oxygen reaches the roots, strengthening the root system.
- Improves water and nutrient absorption: Prevents runoff and ensures irrigation and fertilizers reach the soil directly.
- Prevents diseases and fungi: Wet thatch is an ideal environment for fungi and pests; removing it significantly reduces these risks.
- Revitalizes the lawn: The lawn responds with denser, more even, and healthier growth.
- Improves garden aesthetics: A well-aerated, thatch-free lawn looks greener, brighter, and well-maintained.
